As part of the move to aralbalkan.com, I wrote a script to migrate my b2 blog engine installation to the latest and greatest WordPress. I'll be releasing the script once I've completed the move.

• Aral: I recently installed WP as well -- while I haven't spent much time customizing the look and feel yet (and I can see you haven't done such either), I do have one small problem I've been trying to solve that I think you'll run into as well...but I must admit, I've only performed cursory searches on the issue in the WP forum and thought I might be able to gain a quick solution from your high traffic blog... WP does some auto formatting to posts -- the big one being a paragraph tag wrapper around every line break it finds -- you'll notice some PHP functions that handle this -- I like the full control of HTML'ing my posts, and don't want extranneous tags in them. And, if you want to post example code in your posts, usually done with a pre tag and some handy CSS, it still adds a paragraph tag around your line line breaks -- check out any of your old posts with code in it to see what I mean: eg, http://aralbalkan.com/360 While I'm assuming there's an easy fix for this (commenting out some PHP somewhere), I haven't seen it yet, so I'm wondering if anyone else who uses WP has a solution...? tx -riley

• Hmm, thanks for the heads up -- those code snippets are not looking too good at all are they? :) Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to look into where the issue is. I'd be hesitant in any case to hack the codebase (it sounds like an issue that should've been handled somehow in the migration.) I'm going to take a look around to see what sort of code-snippet plugins already exist for WP (I'd integrated Geshi into b2 earlier, on FlashAnt). (I know this won't solve your issue but I'm sure a little more searching on the WP support forums should bring about an answer.)

• You can turn off the WYSIWYG editor from the admin console -> options -> writing...and I did find some code formatting plugins, but unfortunately, nothing seems to work with WP 2.0. http://priyadi.net/archives/2005/09/27/wordpress-plugin-code-autoescape/ In addition, I did see some issues reported around a bug in the editor itself, but w/out resolutions; taken from http://www.thunderguy.com/semicolon/wordpress/code-markup-wordpress-plugin/ * leading whitespace is trimmed within elements (this is an editor bug) * line breaks are mangled within elements (this is an editor bug) * after you have saved the post, the code does not display correctly (even in HTML view) * because the display is wrong, you can’t edit code after it has been saved. ...after writing the above, I did some additional research -- by playing with the php files for WP, you can get the aforementioned plugin to work, but with a very small side effect of an additional p tag in the begginning and end of your code: try changing the following line in the Main Page Template: the_content('Read the rest of this entry»'); to echo $post->post_content; ...apparently this gives you the raw html without add'l WP formatting. I'll continue the search and keep you updated with what I find...good luck. -riley
