We have a Sony (we have an HC40E but they don't make it anymore, about 3 years old and it rocks!) and both Paul and my bro (filmmakers by training) say they are da bomb, so that's my rec for a camcorder.
As for the DSLR, don't even speak to me :p ;-)

I've got a HC30E, it's pretty good, but as Relly says they don't make that range any more.
What DSLR you going for? The Nikon D40 and D40x are both pretty good value, and quite small for a DSLR.
